Business Development
Your pipeline belongs where your loans already live.
Business Development is commercial loan pipeline management built into Square 1 Credit Suite, the loan origination system your lenders already use. It turns Square 1 into the workspace your commercial and ag lenders start their day in. Opportunities, call activity, follow-ups, goals, and management oversight live alongside origination, so a qualified deal moves into a proposed loan with the customer context already attached.
The system your officers actually use is a spreadsheet
Most lending teams already have a system for tracking opportunities. It is a spreadsheet, an inbox, a stack of notes, and whatever the officer remembers on the way to the pipeline meeting.
Adding a general-purpose CRM on top usually makes it worse. One more login. One more place to rekey a customer. One more system nobody updates after the first quarter.
Business Development takes the opposite approach. It is not a CRM bolted onto your loan origination system. It is a native module inside Square 1 Credit Suite, built around how commercial lenders actually work: log the call, set the next step, move the stage, and when the deal is ready, convert it straight into the proposed loan workflow.
The advantage is not the feature list. It is that your officers are already logged in.
“The advantage is that your officers are already logged in.”
For loan officers: know what to do next before you open the file
Business Development opens on a dashboard, not a search screen. Overdue follow-ups, work due today, active opportunities, estimated and weighted value, current stage, days in stage, and the next step are all visible before you click anything.
Open an opportunity and the whole relationship is there: the customer, the amount, the pipeline stage, the probability, the last conversation, and the follow-up you set for yourself. Log a call in seconds. Update the next step. Move the stage.
Work the way you prefer with Split, List, and Kanban views. The module remembers which one you use.
“Behind pace becomes a number rather than an impression.”
For lending leadership: pipeline meetings grounded in activity, not self-reporting
Open management oversight before a pipeline review, a coaching conversation, or ALCO prep and see team pipeline, weighted forecast, annual goal pacing, individual officer performance, activity health, and stalled opportunities.
Filter by officer and product type. Drill into the records you are permitted to see. Pull a pipeline funnel that summarizes opportunity count, total estimated value, weighted value, stage distribution, expected close timing, and stale-stage risk, in a form you can take into a board or ALCO discussion.
Officer goals are configured annually with monthly and quarterly pacing, so behind pace is a number rather than an impression.
For the institution: prospecting connects to production
Convert to Proposed Loan is the bridge.
From a qualified opportunity, the module creates the proposed loan for the linked customer, carries the estimated amount and assigned officer forward, and opens the Note Information form directly. No loading the customer in the treeview first. No rekeying what business development already knows.
The relationship history stays in Business Development after conversion, so the call log that produced the deal does not disappear the moment underwriting starts.
What is included:
Dashboard-first workspace
Follow-up work, opportunity status, and pipeline activity on entry. My Follow-Ups groups your queue by urgency: overdue, due today, later this week, and upcoming.
Opportunities that hold the whole deal
Amount, product type, assigned officer, stage, probability, weighted value, expected close timing, days in stage, next step, notes, follow-ups, and full call history. One account can carry as many concurrent opportunities as the relationship warrants, each as its own record.
Stages that fit your process, not ours
Configure your own pipeline stages and default probabilities. Officers advance or regress a deal freely, because real deals do not move in a straight line. Closed Won and Closed Lost are protected as terminal outcomes, and closing an opportunity never deletes its history.
Follow-up discipline
Set follow-ups against an opportunity, complete or reschedule them, and get notified when work goes overdue through both email and an in-app banner. Institutions control notification behavior centrally. Individual users control their own preferences.
Goals and pacing
Annual officer goals with monthly and quarterly pacing, visible to the officer on their own dashboard and to leadership across the team.
Pipeline funnel reporting
Opportunity count, total estimated value, weighted value, stage distribution, expected close timing, and stale-stage risk, filterable by officer and product type, scoped by permission.
Configuration built for day one
A dedicated Business Development configuration area covering call categories, call types, pipeline stages, officer goals, product types, and notification settings. Sensible defaults ship with the module, so an institution can launch without a custom development engagement.
Permissions that hold
Business Development access, opportunity create and edit, ownership reassignment, Convert to Proposed Loan, and management oversight are separate permissions in the existing Square 1 Security Levels model. Management views are enforced at the permission layer, not hidden in the interface.
AI pipeline coaching for lenders and managers
Ivy is Suntell’s AI persona, the intelligence layer built into Square 1 Credit Suite. In Business Development, she works in a panel that follows you through the module and knows what you are looking at. You do not have to explain the deal before you ask about it.
For officers, Ivy helps prepare for a call, structures rough notes into something usable in your own words, points out where activity has gone quiet, and surfaces what is worth knowing about the relationship.
For managers, Ivy assembles pipeline briefings, flags concentration concerns, and identifies officers running behind goal pace.
The guardrails, stated plainly
Ivy is advisory. She does not approve, decline, or price credit, and she does not present forecasts as underwriting conclusions. Her observations carry the source context they came from, and she says so when the historical data behind a projection is thin.
Ivy describes what the record shows. She does not characterize anyone’s attitude, effort, or ability. Managers draw conclusions about their people. Ivy gives them evidence.
Ivy is built to fair-lending expectations. Protected class characteristics are not part of what she receives or what she is asked to evaluate, and she does not identify, rank, or target prospects.
Business Development works with Ivy turned off. If she is unavailable, the panel says so, and every other workflow in the module keeps running.
Common questions about Business Development
We already have a CRM. Why would we use this?
Keep your CRM. Business Development is not trying to be your marketing automation platform or your enterprise relationship database. It is the pipeline layer for commercial and ag lending, in the system where the loan actually gets made. The advantage is that your officers are already logged in.
Our officers will not adopt another system.
That is the right instinct, and it is the constraint the module was built against. If logging a call and updating a follow-up is not faster than the spreadsheet, it does not get used. Dashboard-first entry, inline call logging, and Ivy’s note assistance exist for that reason.
Where does our data go?
AI processing runs in Suntell’s secure Azure environment, hosted in the United States. Tax identification numbers, account numbers, and customer name information are not transmitted. Customer data is not used to train models, and information is not pooled across institutions. A member of your team reviews every AI-assisted output. How Suntell handles AI data, governance, and oversight
How much setup does this take?
The module ships with working defaults for stages, categories, types, and notifications. An administrator reviews and adjusts rather than building from scratch.
Does Ivy make decisions about deals or borrowers?
No. Ivy is advisory. She does not approve, decline, or price credit, and she does not assess creditworthiness. She prepares information and points out what is worth noticing. Your team decides.
Can we control who sees team pipeline data?
Yes. Management oversight is a separate permission in the existing Square 1 Security Levels model, enforced at the permission layer.
Does a qualified opportunity have to be rekeyed as a loan?
No. Convert to Proposed Loan creates the proposed loan for the linked customer and carries the estimated amount and assigned officer forward.
Do banks need a CRM for commercial lending?
Most community banks do not need a general-purpose CRM to manage a commercial loan pipeline. They need the pipeline in the system where the loan gets made. A separate CRM means another login, another place to rekey a customer, and another system that stops getting updated. Business Development puts opportunity tracking, call activity, follow-ups and goal pacing inside Square 1 Credit Suite, where the officer already works and where a qualified opportunity converts directly into a proposed loan.
